Memories and Reflections from Barcelona

By Sister Marissa Piramide OSB

The Missionary Benedictine Sisters started pastoral ministry with the Filipino community in Barcelona in 1986. I came in 1992. A few days after my arrival, the Centro Filipino invited me to join the group representing them at a gathering of Moroccans in one of the churches. It was a peaceful assembly where the Moroccans expressed to the Spanish government and the wider community their issues, their appeals, as foreigners and migrants.

World Youth Day 2011, Madrid: Firm In The Faith

By Maribel Tadong
World Youth Day 2011 SYM-Philippines Delegate (Pilgrim)

I always tell my friends that when I first dreamed of joining the 2011 WYD in Madrid, all I had back then were my bosses’ permission, my passport and enormous faith. I called it dreaming the impossible, ambitious dream, as I did not have enough funds for the trip.

I have this big picture of Blessed John Paul II on my altar. Every day, in the months before WYD Madrid, I would look at his picture before leaving for work and smile, silently asking him to help me with my preparations. It was the same prayer that I whispered to Don Bosco when his pilgrim relic visited the Philippines. With two saintly ‘heavyweights’ championing my cause how could our ever generous God refuse?

Who Has Time For The Young?

By Sr. Eva N. Calingo, CM

I Miss my Previous Work

Never had I thought of being sent her to Salamanca, Spain. For some months now I sit down day after day learning the Spanish language. I miss the active apostolate that I was involved in before: the soul-searching and far reaching questions and life testimonies of the prisoners where I worked; the joy and laughter, and the simple but difficult-to-answer question in the school; the hopeful but pain-filled look in the eyes of the street children; and the seemingly monotonous but very challenging work in the handicrafts center. But then life here in Spain opened to me the door that leads to yet another world I did not expect to experience –the world of some young people from all over Europe and a few from Japan – that of my classmates in the intensive language courses.
