Death of Edito Dumaboc, former Columban seminarian from Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay
I just received the sad news of he death in Chile at the age of 41 of Edito Dumaboc, a former Columban seminarian from Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay. He started his time with the Columbans in Cebu City, under the direction of your editor, in the late 1980s. May he rest in peace.
Here is the email sent by Fr Derry Healy, the Columban Regional Director in Chile.
Estimados todos,
Edito Dumaboc, a Filipino and former Columban student presently living in Temuco in the south of Chile passed away on the evening of 8th September in the Hospital Clinica Alamana in Temuco after an almost two-year fight against cancer. He was 41.
He came to Chile in the early 1990´s for his FMA (first mission experience) and worked in the Mapuchemission with Fr Barney Martin and Fr Michael Howe. He fell in love with Vanesa and decided to leave the program and begin a new life with her. Fr Barney Martin officiated at their wedding and they set up a very successful English languge insititute in Temuco.
A very proficient singer and musician, Edito won many friends and was a very committed to his faith. He maintained a strong link with the Columbans in the Region and was a very good supporter of Columban Mission. Throughout his illness he was accompanied by many Columbans.
I had the privilege of celebrating what we called 'the Last Supper' with him and his family last Friday week in his hospital room as he moved to prepare himself for dying and bidding farewell to those around him. He participated actively in the Eucharist and shared with us his sentiments as he realized that death was imminent. After Mass we had a feast of roast pig.
While Edito never persued the missionary priesthood, he continued to be a great missionary inserting himself into the local community and in his dialogue with campesinos and Indigenous people of Mapuche lands.
He is survived by his parents, brothers and sisters in the Philippines.
His funeral takes place in Temuco tomorrow Friday 10th September and the principal celebrate is Fr Michael Howe.
May he rest in peace.
Derry
