Old Age
The article on 'Old Age, A Gifted Time' by Fr. Keith Gorman on the Nov-Dec 2008 issue is a good entry for youngsters to appreciate old age, especially those who are anxious about it. I heard others talking that they do not want to live longer reaching old age because of the difficulties that they might suffer, of the rejection from family members, and the feeling of uselessness.
We can understand them of their anxieties, but aren't those unnecessary? If we can only take time to pause in every moment, there is nothing to worry. Instead, we can find ourselves wondering of God's creation, of what surrounds us, of what has brought us to where we are, and of what have we gone through in all those years reaching the present. Indeed old age is a gift from God for not all can cross the bridge towards there. No matter how difficult life may seem, those who reach old age are lucky enough to have lived such long, longer than others had ever experienced for unto them were given enough time to enjoy life in all of God's creation; to them were revealed the secrets of ageing that others will never have the chance to know; and to them were cultivated the wisdom that years taught them.
And in grateful hearts, we pray for God's grace that:
May we all have the eyes that see the real beauty of life.
May we all have the heart that feels the true essence of living.
May we all have the life that would continuously speak of God's ultimate goodness.
God bless us all!
