History Alive: The Voyage of the Balangay

The Balangay Starts Its Historic Voyage

MANILA, September 1

Filipinos witnessed today the historic maiden voyage of the ancient boat, the Balangay, which starts her epoch-making journey on Philippine seas.

The Balangay, which is similar to the boats built and used hundreds of years, will sail to every major port in the Philippines.

Her team of navigators will also organize coastal clean-up, tree planting, lectures on Philippine maritime history, and mini-fiestas to rekindle the glorious days of the Filipino seafarers.

The Voyage of Balangay project is expected to revive maritime consciousness in the country by successfully building the ancient boat, a historic proof of the Filipinos’ ingenious skills in shipbuilding and maritime navigation, and sailing on Philippine seas.

Completed in June 2009, the Balangay was presented by the Kaya ng Pinoy Foundation and was later launched into the waters of Manila Bay with the ngandahig, the rope-cutting ceremony which eased the ancient boat into the sea.

The Balangay, a legacy of ancestors handed down through generations, symbolizes the Filipino people’s ingenuity, resiliency, strength, courage, and unity.

Kaya ng Pinoy Foundation is a non-stock, non-profit Filipino organization that pushes for projects that uphold national pride and promote the Filipinos’ unique traits and world-class skills. The foundation was formed by members of the successful first Philippine Mt. Everest Expedition.

The Voyage of the Balangay

Though I get rather nervous when I'm travelling by boat and the sea is only choppy, I admire those who see the sea as a challenge to be adventurous and, at the same time, tell us something about our ancestors. In 1976 Tim Severin, an English explorer, set out on a journey with three others in a leather boat named Brendan to follow what might have been the journey of St Brendan, an Irish monk who died in 577 - a few years before St Columban set off on his voyage with twelve other monks from Ireland to continental Europe. it is possible that St Brendan reached north America.

One of my favourite poems in school was Sea Fever, by John Masefield:

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky

And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by

And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sails shaking

And a gray mist on the seas' face and a gray dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again for the call of the running tide

Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;

and all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying

And the flung spray and the blown spume and the seagulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again adn the vagrant gypsy life,

to the gulls's way and the whale's way where the wind's like a whetted knife;

and all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover

And a quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.

May the voyagers on the Balangay have safe sailing.

no wonder you loved the poem

no wonder you loved the poem father. makes you long for the peace the sea waves bring. i always get nostalgic when i am sitting by the shore. but sometimes, when i happen to be along a dirty shore, it ruins the mood.

I must go down to the seas again...

Thanks to Kaya ng Pinoy Foundation for bringing us back the Balangay. The present generation will have its own touch of the so-called piece of Philippine history.

Sea Fever is such a beautiful poem! "I must go down to the seas again..." I just love to watch a boat sailing but thinking of sea-sickness, I don't think I will enjoy the ride.  Hmmm...pondering on a boat-ride of this life, will I be able to take it?  Will I be courageous enough to face the many confrontations? How will I make the step into the roaring waters of the many challenges of life?

God's strength be upon me and each of you.

Bon Voyage!
