St Columban and nature (From the Life of St Columban by the Monk Jonas)![]() Jonas, the author of the biography, became a monk at Bobbio, in northern Italy, three years after Columban’s death there. And do not wonder that the beasts and birds thus obeyed command of the man of God. For we have learned from Chamnoald, royal chaplain at Laon, who was his attendant andsquirrel disciple, that he had often seen Columban wandering about in the wilderness fasting and praying, and calling the wild beasts and birds. These came immediately at his command and he stroked them with his hand. The beasts and birds joyfully played, frisking about him, just as cats frisk about their mistresses. Chamnoald said he had often seen him call the little animal, which men commonly name a squirius (squirrel) from the top of a tree and take it in his hand and put it on his neck and let it go into and come out from his bosom. 'Pray daily, fast daily, study daily, work daily’ (St Columban, 540 - 615, feast day 23 November) ![]() Celebrate the feast of Christmas every day, even every moment in the interior temple of your spirit, remaining like a baby in the bosom of the heavenly Father, where you will be reborn each moment in the Divine Word, Jesus Christ -St Paul of the Cross (1694-1775), Founder of the Passionists, feast day 19 October We must pray without tiring, for the salvation of mankind does not depend on material success; – St Frances Xavier Cabrini, ‘Mother Cabrini’ Pope recognizes martyrdom of Austrian VATICAN CITY (AP) - Pope Benedict XVI approved recognition of martyrdom for an Austrian who was beheaded by the Nazis for refusing to serve in Hitler’s army, paving the way for the man to be made a saint. Ten years ago, a Berlin court exonerated Jaegerstaetter, who was drafted after thebook on franz annexation of his native Austria, for refusing to serve in the Nazi army. His request to be excused from regular army service, and to do non-combat duty, had been denied, and he was ordered executed for treason. Franz Jaegerstaetter (20 May 1907 – 9 August 1943) was a married man with three daughters. You can read more about him at www.justpeace.org/franz.htm and at http://bocs.hu/jager-a.htm. A PRAYER FOR WORLD PEACE ![]() Lord, we pray for the power to be gentle, the strength to be forgiving, the patience to be understanding and the endurance to accept the consequences of holding to what we believe to be right. May we put our trust in the power of good to overcome evil and the power of love to overcome hatred. We pray for the vision to see and the faith to believe in a world emancipated from violence, a new world where fear shall no longer lead men to commit injustice, nor selfishness make them bring suffering to others. Help us to devote our whole life and thought and energy to the task of making peace, praying always for the inspiration and the power to fulfill the destiny for which we and all men were created. -ANONYMOUS |
