Dear Mr Christopher Ong
PAX!
Let me introduce myself. I am Liane Palileo, a third-year high school student in
St Scholastica’s College Manila. I was touched by your article, A Tale of Two
Christmases, that was featured in the November- December 2007 issue.
Christmas is a happy event for everyone, especially for children, because it is
the happiest day of the year besides our birthday and we receive many gifts.
Also, it is the season when even expensive foods are served. But here in the
Philippines, Christmas is very different from other countries, aside from the
climate and the types of food being served. Christmas is the season when
Filipino families reunite and spend much, even though the next day there are no
more savings left for them. They also forget their problems during this season.
I’ve been spending Christmas in a routine and all I think of are the happenings
during the yuletide season, the gifts I will receive and our reunion with my
relatives. We don’t think about the real meaning of Christmas. Today, the
children, even I, forget its real meaning. It is not only the gifts that we
should consider but also put first in our minds that this is the day that Jesus
Christ was born and because of Jesus we are saved through his suffering.
As you wrote in your article, even though we may spend Christmas in other places
or countries, we should not forget the real essence of Christmas and why we
celebrate and remember this season.
Thank you for inspiring and helping us to always remember to put God first in
everything. Thank you for reminding us of the real and true meaning of
Christmas.
Sincerely yours,
Liane Palileo
