QUALIFYING RIDE

On our way to the village, a pregnant woman was asking for a lift. ‘Are you sure you will not give birth?’ I asked. ‘No, no Obruni (white man); I am only on my sixth month,’ she appealed. She climbed into the car waggling her head half-smiling at the same time.

LOCAL FAVORITE

From Hennef in Siegen, West Germany, we were going to the Redemptorist Monastery at Kloster when a Filipina married to a German gave us a lift. She introduced herself as Melanie working in Hamburg. ‘In Hamburg?’ I further asked in excitement, ‘So you like hamburger?’. This to the amusement of her husband.

UNINTENTIONAL REMINDER

I was having a staff meeting of the Hani Elementary School, re-echoing the request of our Bishop Kwasi Matthew Gyamfi of Sunyani Diocese that we should hang a crucifix in all the school rooms and offices. ‘Yes, we want the picture of the bishop, Father,’ the Principal replied absentmindedly.

LESSON APPLICATION

One of our teachers in Wenchi, Joseph Manu, gave a lively talk on bribery and corruption in Nchiraa (In-chi-rah) village. On the way back, he joined me and saw that the back of the car was full of big yam tubers (Ghana’s staple food, normally one or two feet long). He was praising the size of the yams when I interrupted him saying, ‘This is real bribery and corruption. These are given by our catechumens who want to be baptized soon.’ Mr Manu just laughed.
